FAOM: a REVIEW of The Petticoat Letters

One thing I’ve always felt when it comes to reading (and reviewing) historical romance/fiction is that I need to take a day or two after finishing the story before I can write the review. For one thing I always, always feel like I need time to return to my own place in time/history and the world - historical’s aren’t the only stories to do this to me, science fiction, fantasy, they do it too.

After I’m reoriented in my normal, then I need to take time to think about everything in the story. The norms for the time period in the book is always different then the cultural and social norms of now, so I always try to think about those differences and how they played into or effected the actual events of the story, or the choices/decisions of the characters in it. In many ways this step for me is simply about trying to discern whether everything that happens in the story makes sense based on what I understand or have been told about the time period.

Fiction is fiction though, whether it’s historical, fantasy, paranormal or contemporary. Whatever slivers of fact are presented in a story are also married to the imagination of the author, and thus historical fiction doesn’t have to be 100% true to the period. In my opinion, despite whatever twists an author includes in their world, the closer to true the better.

What do you think? Are your favorite historical romances true to the historical period they represent? Or do the authors you love to read take a greater degree of creative license within the historical era they’re writing? #TheseAreThingsIWonder

Now on to the book...

THE REVIEW

The Petticoat Letters
by Kelly Lyman

Reading debut novels is always something fun for me. A fresh voice in any genre is nice to discover. Sometimes a debut work is good but rough, yet you know (or at least believe) with time and dedication the author will find his/her rhythm and their writing will improve. Other times you finish the story and just think yes! Yes, this is a writer with amazing skill, a wonderful voice, a beautiful way of telling the story, and such incredible potential that you simply can’t wait to read whatever they may come up with next. Either case is fine but the yes! finds are the ones that make reading all debut works worth it.

For me, The Petticoat Letters is one of those yes stories; Kelly Lyman one of the yes writers whose works I will continue to look forward to reading. While the American Revolution isn’t a subject I’ve read a lot about, it is not an era of which I’m ignorant. And this story with it’s talk of battles waged, it’s delightfully simple yet complex characters, and even it’s settings... it is honestly, simply, beautifully written and so well done.

From the very first chapter I was pulled in to the story by Nora Bishop and her somewhat unique situation. I say somewhat unique because an unmarried woman suddenly finding herself bereft of immediate family and under the protection of some other branch on the family tree is not in and of itself a unique situation in historical times, especially not during one of war. There are a million ways Lyman could have developed the storyline from this particular starting point, the one she chose - fascinating.

In The Petticoat Letters we follow Nora Bishop as she struggles with the loss of her family and the uncertainty of what her future may hold. Through the course of the story she discovers many things that ultimately change her perspective, her feelings, and her loyalties. She learns, re-learns, and learns again that appearances can be deceiving and that the truth of a person hearts is often very different from what they present to the world. In a very real sense her life is utterly changed not just once but twice. She has, right from the start, an innocence that isn’t ignorant of the harsh realities in life, yet she carries with her throughout the story a degree of naïveté that lends credence to the role she ends up playing. She’s smart, compassionate, inventive when she needs to be, quick-witted and, quite frankly, brave. She’s also more than a bit impetuous and frequently acts before considering all possible options and their consequences.

It is one impulsive choice after another that first leads her to meet Alex Foster and then to continually come to be within his sphere. The rest of their story, I guess you could say, is history. The path they take is a winding one full of danger and the choices they’re forced to make could very easily destroy them. But the journey - oh the journey through this story is wonderful and it entranced me completely.

For a debut historical romance I think it’s safe to say that Kelly Lyman hit a home-run with The Petticoat Letters. I’m also feeling pretty confident in saying that if you give it a chance, you’ll probably love Nora and Alex, and their story, just as much as I did.

FAOM: We Recommend...

The very first romance novel I read was a historical romance I stole off my older sister’s shelf when I was a teenager. I fell in love with the characters of that book and the somewhat madcap, sort of heartbreaking, but totally enchanting story that was told. I was always an avid reader and dreamer but that book was quite possibly the first time I was left with a HEA that simply melted my heart. When I first read that book I was on the verge of first love, I had a basic understanding of relationships and what they entailed (I was a teen after all, and it was the ‘90’s), but romance wasn’t really something I’d spent a lot of time thinking about in detail.

Throughout my remaining teenage years, I found myself searching the shelfs for books which would leave me feeling a similar warm-heartedness upon finishing the last page. It wasn’t until my early 20’s (and after having my first child) that I put forth a concerted effort to find the kind of books that provided that feeling and gave me a brief mental escape from my daily life. That moment, or period in my life is really when my obsession, for lack of a better word, with the romance genre came in to being. I went back to that very first book and read it again, then I haunted the library and bookstores exploring the shelves. I used the internet to the best of my ability to discover other authors and books that would be similar to what had hooked my interest in the first place. In those early days of my romance reading, historical romance was my go-to and my collection of books (these days in the Corner Table House referred to as “Mom’s Love Library”) has grown and grown and grown.

It’s no longer just historical romance on my shelves, but the books and stories from those early days are still some of my favorites to turn to when I need a break from my normal chaotic life, or when I want a romantic story that offers a glimpse into a way of life entirely different from today, or when…. Well, you get the point. Even today I still love historical romance.

So, when I started working with Kelly for this month’s FAOM posts I decided to ask her if she’d help me out with a new kind of post for the blog. A kind of recommended reading, top 5 in a genre, my favorite stories kind of list post. And that’s what we have for you today. Each of us scoured our minds, our bookshelves and our hearts, and have come up with 5 historical romance novels that we recommend to you…

FAOM: Romance During the American Revolution

Back in November when it first came out I spotlighted this book as a new release. Now I’m sharing it with you once again because it is the debut work from January’s Featured Author of the Month, Kelly Lyman.

The Petticoat Letters is a historical romance set during the American Revolution. It’s main character Nora Bishop is a 20-year old, unmarried woman in a time when women were considered far less capable then men. What they could do and what they could handle, while fierce at home, was assumed to be simply less than what men could do and what men could handle. It is my belief, after having only read a small bit of this book so far, that Miss Nora Bishop is going to prove that belief to be entirely false.

Will she? Won’t she?...

The only way to find out for sure is to get the book and find out!

FAOM: Let's Get the Party Started with a GIVEAWAY!

The more months of the Featured Author of the Month that pass the more fun I’m having! As I incorporate new things, try new ways of sharing some fun info and continue to do what I love (aka sharing and talking about books!) this feature is honestly becoming one of the best things that gets me from one day to the next in my crazy life. I love meeting new authors, or learning more about authors I already enjoy, discovering new & fabulous books to read, and I really love getting to spread this love to all of you by giving books away on a regular basis.

Which is what I’m here today to tell you about.

It’s been a while since I’ve talked extensively about historical romance novels but if you’ve been here for a while, or looked back at old posts, historical romance as a genre is where I originally developed my obsession. From there it grew to encompass pretty much anything connected to the overarching romance genre but it all started with a Regency-era historical romance. Now the book I’m giving away this month isn’t a Regency, it does however reach back to a period a bit earlier in history but closer to home.

The Petticoat Letters by this month’s Featured Author takes place during the American Revolution and is the story of Nora Bishop. I’ll be sharing more about the book and its story as the month goes on but from the little bit I’ve read I can tell you that the story is rich in history, full of color and intrigue, and so far is shaping up to be an excellent story.

With the FAOM Kelly Lyman, I am giving away 2 e-copies of the book in this month’s giveaway contest. As always there a variety of ways to enter – including a daily entry option on Twitter – and this contest runs throughout the month. Winners will be chosen at random (using rafflecopter.com & random.org) and announced on January 30, 2018!

You’ve got nothing to lose by entering but you could absolutely win an great new book, by a great new author!

Good luck to all entrants, and in the meantime happy reading!!

An Historical Romance Debut Release

My love affair with romance began many years ago when I picked up a historical romance novel in my older sister’s room and started reading. While my interests have spread much wider through the romance genre since that long ago day, I still love going back in time and reading romance as it may have played out in other times. It is with that in mind I highlight a new release from a debut author today!

The Petticoat Letters
by Kelly Lyman

At the outbreak of the Revolutionary war, Nora Bishop’s home is burned to the ground – along with her dreams, plans and all her family members except one. At 20-years-old and still unmarried, she moves to Manhattan to live with her Loyalist uncle, hoping to find her brother who has joined the Patriot cause against her late family’s wishes.

But, battle breaks out and she finds herself at the mercy of one American ranger, Alex Foster, who is the only person in a position to bring her to safety. Her growing feelings toward Alex and his passion for freedom help her re-evaluate her stance on the case for independence and makes her question her loyalties further.

When she is asked to spy for the rebels, she agrees.

But can she partake in the act of treason and do what is asked of her when the sadistic Captain William Roth seems to watch her every move and threatens the life of her brother who has been captured?

And how can she grow closer to Alex when the war threatens to tear them apart?

For both George and Dora that brief first encounter was as fleeting as it was unforgettable. Now is the time for a second chance. And while even true love comes with a risk, who are two dreamers to argue with destiny?

What’s better for a Thursday Throwback than a romantic trip back in time… You know, a really great historical romance can simply bring new color to your world.

Whether it's something new, new-to-me, or an old favorite, I am constantly scrolling through reading lists, recommended new releases and looking through my own digital and hard-copy libraries…  So this week, to get myself back into a book blogging mindset after a couple months of hard times (wondering WTF? See here.) I’m sharing with you some of my reading recommendations. Some will be books that I’ve read and loved for years – my all-time favorites. Others will be ones that I’ve read, loved, and/or reviewed in more recent times. And finally some will be new and (possibly) up-coming releases that I’ve heard wonderful things about.

“This is where I belong. There is no other.” I cry out as I continue to pump my hips. I can see her breasts bouncing beneath her shift with each stroke. I rip the front of her dress and her milky white breasts spill out. With the savageness of a man that has too long been denied a meal, I take her rosy nipple in my mouth and I suckle and bite. Sarah scratches my back as she wriggles beneath me, begging for release. I’m not going to let her finish quite yet; I pull out, but before Sarah can complain, I have her bent over the bed in front of me. I rest my erection at her entrance once more, both of us breathless from our mad lovemaking. Sarah pushes back and instead of refusing her, I take her hips in my hands once more and sink into her wetness. Using my feet, I force her stance wider while pushing her body flat on the bed. I look up towards the ceiling with my eyes closed, and let myself feel her sucking me in. I’m so deep this way. I pull almost all the way out and glide my full length in, trying to make it last for as long as possible. This feels like heaven. With each penetration, Sarah moans and I know that she will not be able to hold off her release much longer. I rest along her back, essentially pinning her to the bed and I start pumping my hips. I do something I’ve never done before and lightly bite the skin on her shoulder. As Sarah lets out a scream of pleasure, I can feel her convulsing and squeezing me. I wait until her peak is just cresting and I stand up and thrust into her until I have my finale. I groan, “Sarah,” as my seed spills inside her.
I can see where my fingers dug into her hip as tiny purple bruises are forming. I gasp in disgust when I see the impression of my teeth in her shoulder. I step back, angry at myself for letting it go to this extreme. “I-I’m so sorry, Sarah.” I hang my head unable to meet her eyes. I am truly a disgusting person for doing those things.
