COVER REVEAL: Darkness Savage by Rachel A. Marks

Darkness Savage by Rachel A. Marks
The Dark Cycle #3

Published by: Skyscape
Publication date: October 13th 2016
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

The forces of Darkness have only gotten stronger as Aidan struggles to control his newly awakened abilities that seem to be his only hope for fixing the mess he made by waking up his little sister, Ava, who seems to think it’s all a game as she taunts him and begins a torturous game of cat and mouse. And while Rebecca isn’t sure where she fits in the fight, one thing she does know is that something has gone very wrong inside her. And uncovering what it is could upend any hope Aidan has to save the lives of everyone he’s grown to love.

Everything he’s built, everything he’s fought for until now, hangs in the balance—as well as the fate of the world. Now Aidan and the Lights he’s brought together must take their true place to fight the forces rising from the shadows at a startling rate, forces trying to tear them apart. But when Aidan can’t save the one thing he needs the most, he begins to wonder if he’ll have anything true left to hold on to in the end.

Introducing Our New REVIEWER -- PRINCESS Z!!!

I am so incredibly excited to announce that my oldest daughter - PRINCESS Z will be joining the Review Staff of this site in the very near future. She will primarily be reviewing the books that she recreationally reads and loves, BUT if you've got a CHILDRENS, YOUTH or YA novel that you'd like to have reviewed please contact us at apalusalight@gmail.com. (All review requests should include the books genre!)

PRINCESS Z particularly enjoys novels of myth, legend, gods & goddesses and novels that include horses. (Can you tell that she is my daughter???) That does not mean that if your novel falls within another genre or subclass that she won't read and/or review it. Ups, Downs, Ins and Outs will NOT at this time be contracting for these specific genre reviews. Princess Z is only 11 years old and is only just starting her "career" of reviewing books. I will be editing and helping her out but still...

If you submit an YA novel for review, it may occur that both Princess Z and I will review it as we both read and enjoy this genre - both reviews will be submitted on Goodreads and Amazon for the benefit of the author.

BOOK TRAILER REVEAL - Link by Summer Wier

LINK by Summer Wier
(The Shadow of Light #1)

Published by: REUTS Publications
Publication date: September 29th 2015
Genres: Science Fiction, Young Adult

Synopsis:
For seventeen-year-old Kira, there’s no better way to celebrate a birthday than being surrounded by friends and huddled beside a campfire deep in the woods. And with a birthday in the peak of summer, that includes late night swims under the stars.

Or at least, it used to.

Kira’s relaxing contemplation of the universe is interrupted when a piece of it falls, colliding with her and starting a chain of events that could unexpectedly lead to the one thing in her life that’s missing—her father.

Tossed into a pieced-together world of carnivals and gypsies, an old-fashioned farmhouse, and the alluring presence of a boy from another planet, Kira discovers she’s been transported to the center of a black hole, and there’s more to the story than science can explain. She’s now linked by starlight to the world inside the darkness. And her star is dying.

If she doesn’t return home before the star’s light disappears and her link breaks, she’ll be trapped forever. But she’s not the only one ensnared, and with time running out, she’ll have to find a way to save a part of her past and a part of her future, or risk losing everything she loves.

Dreamy, fluid, and beautiful, Link pairs the mystery of science fiction with the minor-key melody of a dark fantasy, creating a tale that is as human as it is out of this world.

TARYN HAD NEVER BEEN NORMAL. She wasn't like other girls- not after that night, that thing, took her parents from her. She made it through hospitals, doctors, and therapy by playing by their rules and saying all the things they wanted to hear. But, inside, she held on to the truth. She knew what she saw. SHE SPENT HER TEEN YEARS PREPARING IN SECRET With her two closest friends at her side, she dedicated herself to a mission. She would train and she would hunt. When the time came, she would be ready. No one she loved would be hurt by one of those monsters ever again But with high school behind them, new found freedom comes with new responsibilities and new problems. Instead of weapons and self defense classes, she now has jobs and bills. The relation-ship with her best friend was suddenly shifting into new, scary territories. How could she take down bad guys if she couldn’t get her own life in order? AND THEN THERE WAS HIM. A mysterious stranger who pops up in suspicious places and throws off all sorts of bad vibes. His face now starred in her regular nightmares and plagued her thoughts in the day. Was she overreacting? Or, was this finally the monster she had been waiting for? As the scars of Taryn’s past rise up to haunt her, she begins to question herself. With her mission faltering and her friendship off kilter, would life ever be the same again? Would she ever be the same?

EXCERPT She hit him with a cushion. “Shut up and play the game.” “Truth or dare?” Aiden asked, his tone resigned. “Dare. I’m not letting you mock my truths.” She leaned forward and started to mix another drink. One she definitely didn’t need but was having anyway. She wasn’t thinking about this lonely dramatic stuff anymore tonight. Even if she had to drown it. “I dare you to kiss the first guy you lay eyes on.” Aiden bolted forward with his announcement, but she was faster. Taryn squeezed her eyes shut instantly. “Nice try, goofball.” “Oh, that’s not fair,” he grumbled. “Should have worded it better,” she mocked him in a singsong voice. Eyes still closed, she raised her glass, a little wobblier than before. “Let’s make a toast. To being losers together on a Friday night.” Instead of a tap of his can to her drink, she felt his fingers slide across the sides of her face and tangle into her hair. Her eyes popped open and locked on his, just inches away. “Gotcha,” he said in a low voice. Before Taryn could gasp, his mouth covered hers. It was no gentle, hesitant brush of the lips like she would have expected. No, Aiden met her with a firm, warm pressure that melted her insides like chocolate. His fingers in her hair tightened, sending electricity zinging through her. The drink in her hand was forgotten and slipped to the floor. Neither of them seemed to notice. He ran his tongue across the seam of her lips, asking, and the room tilted. She opened for him. His teeth caught her lower lip and tugged, lightly. She could have sworn she felt the tingle right down to her toes. He pulled back, dragging his lips against hers in a slow caress. They sat there in the silence, eyes wide. Her head swam and her heart raced. Her scalp tingled where his fingers still pressed into her hair. Those eyes of his had turned to that shade of rich, dark blue. They trailed back down to her lips, which felt a little swollen. From kissing him. Aiden. Heat blossomed through her belly. That just happened. But, for once, she wasn’t running a million thoughts through her head, worrying each one to death. She wasn’t thinking at all. Her panicky, loud brain was turned off, leaving something dark and hungry at the reins. Taryn wasn’t going to question it. Not tonight. She grabbed Aiden’s shirt and pulled him back down to return the kiss. Somewhere in her head, it registered. She was kissing her best friend. And it was amazing.

THE REVIEW

Reizo Rush hears voices. At school they call him the "Crazy Kid" because he tends to talk to himself and occasionally reacts over-enthusiastically and violently due to the voices he hears. Aimee De Luca was officially dead for more than 40 minutes. During that time she had an experience that would change her forever once she was returned to life.

When they meet and connect at the pond on Aimee's families farm (in VOICES), neither could have imagined the impact they'd have on each others lives. Neither could have imagined what they would become to each other. And neither of them could have anticipated the outcome of the course of events that they embark upon together.

WHISPERS picks up right where VOICES left off. Reizo Rush is mourning the loss of Aimee, who died at the end of the first book and the voices he's heard in his head for years have been silenced by meds. Yet, while he's finally got the quiet in his mind that he's always wanted and he still has his artistic skill and passion, he's not quite sure how to live without Aimee.

And then suddenly her voice is in his head too. And she's asking for his help.

Her plea for help leads him on the adventure of a lifetime, one not necessarily always good. But through his travels he meets Mack, Richard, Bree and an assortment of other characters. His old pals, those two voices in his head, return and he finally learns why he can hear them and how he's different from other people.

Everything he does is for his love of Aimee and for his mom.  When they're threatened, he reacts, and when he reacts, he discovers some truly amazing things about himself.

This is one of those books that when I finished reading it, I had to take a minute and just absorb the feelings that surrounded me - my own and the ones that emerged from the book. I've lucked out recently and stumbled upon, or had placed in my path, several extremely great books that have wowed me. WHISPERS by R.E. Rowe, and its predecessor VOICES, are two such books.

I don't know if I can even begin to pinpoint the things in these books that I love. Really, it's not just one thing, or even a couple of things. It's not one character, though I do love Reizo. It's not the basis of the story line - do the rules of reincarnation need to be revamped? - though I really find the whole story line utterly fascinating.  It's not any one thing but all of them entangled together to make an unforgettable story of love, life, loss and joy, and what we can do to truly experience the journey.

If you're looking for a new read, I whole-heartedly recommend both books in the Reincarnation series by R.E. Rowe - book one, VOICES, and book two, WHISPERS.

Be Entranced by the Fire of the Sea - REVIEW

Fire of the Sea by Lyndsay Johnson
Publication date: March 24th 2014
Genres: Fantasy, Mythology, Young Adult

Synopsis:

Sharp, sleek, and golden. Like the dagger she has worn since childhood, eighteen-year-old Aeva is all three of these things. But there is something else that this mermaid and her prized weapon share – they are both hunted.

Hidden within the caves off Iceland’s dark shore, Aeva waits to take her place as the next ruler of the Mermaids. But when Aeva uses her potent and alluring song to save a drowning human, she disrupts a delicate balance. Realizing she has unexpectedly bound herself to Gunnar, Aeva is torn between duty and love.

Aeva severs one life to begin another, and soon finds herself not only rejected by the sea, but also stalked by an old enemy. As the worlds of myth and man intertwine, Aeva will challenge fate to protect her own sacred relic and the man she loves.

But legend and lies cast an intricate net. With time and safety quickly unraveling for Aeva and Gunnar, there is only one clear course: Find and defeat Delphine before she can shift again.

REVIEW

To anyone who has taken an opportunity to look back in the archives of this blog and seen the titles of the books that I have in the past read, reviewed or discussed, it’s pretty apparent that while I read almost only romance novels, within the genre my interest ranges wide and far.  I’m too much of a sucker for a HEA to really enjoy anything but romance, though I do on occasion pick up something non-fiction.  However I’ve always viewed reading as an opportunity for escape from my everyday life and so it is safe to say that I’m utterly fascinated by fiction.
Whether a story is set in medieval Europe, Australia in the late 1890’s, Regency England, the Gold Rush era in America, 1800’s Westerns, space-based futures, time travellers, sci-fi contemporaries, paranormals that span centuries and worlds, or whatever, I simply love them all and I don’t know that I could pick a specific subcategory of romance that is my favorite.  But I will admit this: any romance story that has at least some basis, or includes some aspect of, myth or legends is usually a story that gets placed at the top of the TBR pile.  I simply adore any inclusion of myth, however it’s adapted, in romance.
Knowing this, it shouldn’t come as any surprise to you, my friendly readers, that Fire of the Sea was a novel that instantly, immediately and completely caught my eye. It’s not too incredibly often that I stumble upon stories of mermaids, selurs, selkies and the like.  I couldn’t pass up the opportunity, and my own personal need, to read and review this story.
And what a story it was.
Sometimes when you’re reading you have to push yourself to accept the reality that the author is creating for you.  Other times, you slip into the story as if it was written for you.  From the moment we first meet Aeva I was... entranced.  To see how this young meriad (aka mermaid) suffers and grows, to see how she’s unsure of herself and yet determined at the same time, and to see her make the hard choices she’s faced with – well, it was amazing and just so well done.
Right from the start you’re introduced to Aeva’s two best friends: Merrick and Sissel, and you can see the dynamics between them. You can feel the bonds of friendship that tie the three together.  You know the lengths that they’d be willing to go for one another, and you can be pretty certain of the soul-deep loyalty they hold for the others.  The truly fascinating and wonderful part of this trio is that they are young, so young to have formed such concrete bonds, and yet you can believe that though they may struggle, and though their faith may waver, those bonds will forever be true.
Then there’s Gunnar.  He fell from the sky, was nearly swallowed by the sea, and led Aeva to land.  Instantly you realize that there is something special about Gunnar, something that makes him special to Aeva, and you can’t wait to see how the journey for these two unfold.  Because really, it’s difficult to imagine how a mermaid and a human can have any kind of future, any kind of path that has them side by side. Yet that is exactly the story that Lyndsay Johnson has written.
Rich in myth and legend, ripe with emotion and the vagaries of real life, Fire of the Sea is simply a wonderful story and, just in case I haven’t made my feelings about it clear yet, I really, really loved it. I loved the depth of the characters, the complexity of the storyline and the way in which (Norse and some Greek) mythology was melded in to it.  From the brightness of Aeva and Gunnar’s heart, to the darkness of Delphine’s nature, there is really nothing that I can complain about, nothing that I could criticize, and nothing that I would see changed.
So if you’re looking for a truly great story to read, I absolutely recommend Lyndsay Johnson’s Fire of the Sea. You won’t be disappointed and I honestly believe that you’ll fall in love with the story as I have.

Feel the Pull in The Siren's Realm - REVIEW

The Siren’s Realm by Megan O’Russell
(The Tethering, #2)

Publication date: April 29th 2015
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

Synopsis:

Jacob loves Emilia Gray, but things aren’t always that simple in the world of Magickind…

The war has begun.

The Dragons are gaining power, and the Gray Clan stands alone. Desperate to find a way to stop the Pendragon, Emilia is forced to seek answers from someone who hasn’t been seen in seventeen years . . . Her mother. Embarking on a magical journey filled with witches, wizards, centaurs and a dangerous and powerful Siren, Jacob and Emilia must take a leap of faith to a land neither could have ever imagined . . . and hope they can then find their way home.

THE REVIEW

They were only children when they found each other but even then they were inseparable. When Emilia is injured during a childhood accident and then heals before Jacob's very eyes, she's forced by magic-kind law to leave him, though she promises him that someday she'll return and leaves with him one of her most prized possessions.

She keeps her promise to him. Years later she returns and introduces him to a world, and a war that he never knew existed.

For Jacob, Emilia was all that mattered and he would do anything to prove himself worthy of her. He would do anything to protect her, to keep her safe. Nothing would stop him from saving her when she's kidnapped by the rebels of the magic world. Yet in saving her, he's also inadvertently tied them together in a bond that only death can sever.

[The above is a brief summarization of book 1 of the series THE TETHERING.]

What was once a magical life suddenly becomes a dark dream and Emilia and Jacob have to face some hard truths. They have to make choices that affect not just themselves but other members of their family and their household.  And they must accept the changes of their world.

For me, the bond between them was obvious right from their first meeting in Tethering. It was a natural affection and love for one another, one that through their tethering is only amplified. Jacob has always loved her, even while she was with Dexter, and throughout THE SIREN'S REALM he struggles with the knowledge that though indivisibly bound, Emilia doesn't feel the same way for him. He can't leave her and wouldn't even if he could. It is, however, delightful to watch and see as this second story in the series develops and Emilia begins to see the truth in her own heart.

I loved watching these two teens struggle with their emotions, while also struggling with the weight of responsibility they both feel for the other members of their household and family. For all of man- and magic-kind, actually. They make some poor decisions along the way and perhaps they don't always fully think through the consequences of the actions they take, but being who they are, and bound as they are, they do the only thing they truly believe they can.

In the end what they did may save them, or it may just hasten their ruin.

I definitely recommend THE SIREN'S REALM as the next story you read. I do however recommend that you read book 1 of the series THE TETHERING first. For one: the story in SIREN'S REALM picks up almost directly from the end of THE TETHERING. And for two: a good majority of the backstory (found in TETHERING) is necessary in order to understand and follow the story in SIREN'S REALM. Characters casually mentioned, yet vastly important in book 2 are only ever introduced, described, and discussed in book 1. Emilia's history is practically the basis of the story line in the second book and is introduced and first explained in book 1.

Bottom line, read both books. You won't be disappointed and furthermore, you'll love every minute of your reading time

It's a COVER REVEAL for The Fading Dusk: Smoke and Mirrors

The Fading Dusk by Melissa Giorgio
(Smoke and Mirrors #1)

Publication date: July 2015
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

Synopsis:

In the gritty city of Dusk, seventeen-year-old Irina makes her living as the street magician Bantheir’s assistant. The job isn’t glamorous, but she loves the crowds, the shows, and most of all, the illusion of magic. But Irina’s world is shattered the night she is arrested and charged as Bantheir’s accomplice to murder—murder by magic.

Real magic, the kind that’s been forbidden since the old wars.

Irina finds the idea of flashy showman Bantheir using actual magic to kill someone laughable, but she’s the only one who sees how ridiculous the claim is. But how can she convince everyone Bantheir is innocent when they’ve already made up their minds? Desperate, Irina must decide who she can trust to help her win her freedom. Is the surly, handsome Captain Leonid telling the truth when he says he believes Irina is innocent, or is he just using her to get to Bantheir? What about Aden, the sweet soldier and longtime fan of Irina’s who claims he’s on her side?

Irina said she wanted to know the truth, but when she stumbles across a dark secret that changes everything, will she be strong enough to survive?

Will this be enough for Ella to take the deal?

Enlisting the help of Kale, Sola, and Jace—Ella sets off to look for the Zdrowy, a mysterious group of Chorý, thought to have been cured of la Luxure.

Join Ella and Kale in the final installment of the Few Are Angels series, as they are set on a path that not only leads to a possible cure to the Chorý status, but may also offer Kale something he has been chasing his entire immortal life—absolution.
