Now I'm Here - Back, Again.

It has been a year since I posted here on the UDIO Blog. Even though I’ve been reading, through the course of the past year I have been unable to truly put words to paper, or screen as the case may be. Not to effectively communicate anything really. I have struggled and I am still struggling even now to find a way to explain.

Over the past month or so I’ve begun to slip back into the blogging world though because I need to. The truth, as bare and plain as it is, is that I need to get back to the things that I’m passionate about: books and authors, stories that have been told, and new ones that are still waiting for their time in the light. But also, writing. I’ve needed to write - in a way I don’t know if I will ever be able to adequately explain. So my re-entry in the blogging sphere has been slow but steady. It’s been a step-by-step process.

First I started by writing about my family (on A Corner Table in My World) and there I shared an explanation about why I disappeared from the blogosphere last year. The short of it being that after a traumatic 2017, a year that ended by rocking my and my family’s foundation, I shut down shortly after the start of 2018. I had to focus inward: on myself, on my kids, on my family. I struggled every single day. Not just to put a smile on my face and pretend that everything was okay (even though I was doing just that), but to do anything beyond the absolute necessary for my family was beyond what I was capable of at the time. Some days it still is.

In figuring out my next step I realized that it wasn’t just blogging I wanted to get back to this year, but that I really wanted, and needed, to get back to writing my own stories. So I spent some time determining how I may be able to do that. I blogged about that on Inside My Mind just after the first of the month, where I shared with everyone my writing goals for 2019. One of the goals I list there is to blog at least once a month on each of my blogs. As a starting point anyways.

Which brings me to the here and to now. Ups, Downs, Ins & Outs has been my baby, my stress relief, my not-so-secret love affair, and a source of pride for well over a decade. It has changed through the years, evolved as I found my footing, floundered as ‘real life’ has demanded more of my attention, and grown tremendously from its origins. I will never walk away from it entirely - despite the evidence of this past year - because it holds too much of my heart and soul. Finding a way to move forward with all the things I want and need to do for myself, without becoming overwhelmed by it all may be difficult, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the past year it’s that while my family is and always will be the center of my very existence, if I’m not happy with ME, their happiness will always be not-quite-enough to sustain me. It can’t be a them or me kind of thing, it has to be all of us. Otherwise, we’re all just... surviving. And I can’t tell you how deeply I want more than that for us. I don’t want us to just survive. I want us to live and to thrive.

I'm not able to dive exclusively back in to this blog, not wholly, and not without attention my family still needs being diverted here. But I am ready to start wading in, to start getting my feet wet again and talking about books and the amazing authors who write them. The Author of the Month feature is still going to be on hold. I hope to eventually bring it back this year in some form but I have to find a way to do it that doesn’t negatively impact my family. That may not be the right way to say it but I want to be able to run the Author of the Month and give the author, and their work and books, all the attention and promotion that they deserve... but I need to figure out how to do that while also doing and being everything to my family that they need me to be.

To start with, I have a stack of review requests that I will begin to address. I’ll do reviews and promote when and how I’m able. And I’ll figure things out, I will, it just may take some time. I have to because as dramatic as it sounds, this past year there has been a little piece of me inside that’s been dead, it’s withered. I need to bring that piece back to life. So I will figure things out.
In the meantime I designed new logos for all the blogs and for the social media accounts connected to them. I’ve been sharing them, launching them into use over the past couple weeks and the UDIO blog is the last to be unveiled. Here it is:

I hope you like it, and I hope you’ll stick around to see how UDIO will continue it's evolution in the book blogging world.

Now tell me:
What was your favourite book of 2018?
What are you reading right now?

Blog Changes and Reading

I’m going to be doing some format/layout/design changes on my blogs – right across the board. It’s my hope that by the end of August I’ll have all the changes made that I want to make and will be able to focus on actual writing and posting blog updates again. The changes will come little by little, as I have time in my day to fiddle with the sites.

In the meantime I’m spending a lot of time reading and re-reading as I’m breastfeeding so my daily/weekly/monthly reading lists are gonna be killer for a while!  :-)  How about you?

Introducing Our New REVIEWER -- PRINCESS Z!!!

I am so incredibly excited to announce that my oldest daughter - PRINCESS Z will be joining the Review Staff of this site in the very near future. She will primarily be reviewing the books that she recreationally reads and loves, BUT if you've got a CHILDRENS, YOUTH or YA novel that you'd like to have reviewed please contact us at apalusalight@gmail.com. (All review requests should include the books genre!)

PRINCESS Z particularly enjoys novels of myth, legend, gods & goddesses and novels that include horses. (Can you tell that she is my daughter???) That does not mean that if your novel falls within another genre or subclass that she won't read and/or review it. Ups, Downs, Ins and Outs will NOT at this time be contracting for these specific genre reviews. Princess Z is only 11 years old and is only just starting her "career" of reviewing books. I will be editing and helping her out but still...

If you submit an YA novel for review, it may occur that both Princess Z and I will review it as we both read and enjoy this genre - both reviews will be submitted on Goodreads and Amazon for the benefit of the author.

TUESDAYS TUNES - Spirits

Yesterday on Inside My Mind I wrote a blog about writers and where/how they find their inspiration. It was also a little bit about the importance of being able to find inspiration in the little, everyday things that many of us take for granted. And I added a song that, honestly, has been in my head and serving as one of those little points of inspiration for me for a while.

And since it seemed like a good choice for this weeks Tuesdays Tunes, I'm sharing it again here.

Enjoy... The Strumbellas - SPIRITS

A Call for Suggestions

Since it’s been almost a year since I’ve posted any reviews - not that I haven’t read (literally) dozens of books, scoured the FanFiction.net archives in several different areas, watched lots of movies and hours upon hours of TV – I wanted to give everyone a chance to make suggestions and recommendations.  I’m going to get started working on some reviews, commentaries and discussions about some of the stuff I’ve taken in during the last year but I’d love to hear what everyone else is interested in too.

Here are some guidelines as far as what I can get my hands on and may be able to review:

Movies – I can more or less get a hold of any new or old movies, and as I’ve seen a few really good ones during 2012 I intend to talk about them at some point in the near future.

TV – like with movies, I can generally get my hands on any TV shows out there; though I am somewhat limited to those shows that air or are available in Canada right now.  That doesn’t mean I can’t get my hands on shows that don’t normally air in Canada but I know there can be issues with some HBO series.

Books – I can be game for anything.  Obviously my usual interests lie in romance, paranormal, sci-fi, fantasy and/or some combination of all of the above, but I can be convinced to read books and stories that are outside of those genres.

FanFiction – if you’re a writer of or just an avid fan of FF, feel free to make recommendations.  My posts about FF aren’t as common but when I find something really good or an author that I think has an intriquing style I will talk about it.

Other Stuff of Interest - and don't be afraid to suggest other interesting things you've come across that you'd like to share or have shared: new/old songs, YouTube videos, blogs, poetry, authors, places, etc.  I like neat, cool, weird, interesting things - you may just put me on to something new!

As always, you can make your recommendations and suggestions here on this blog by commenting on this post or on the specific page – Books, TV and Movies, or FanFiction.  You can also email your suggestions to: apalusalight@gmail.com

Featuring Chrissy Peebles - Part 3

For this last part of the Blog Feature that Chrissy and I have worked on for the last few weeks.  This is the end of road for the feature but even though we’ve got to go our separate ways again, both of us – Chrissy on The Purple Brick Road and myself here on this blog – will be busy with our work and a number of exciting post over the next weeks and months.  But before we’re really done we’ve got a couple more things to share with you!!

If you’ve managed to make the jump over to Chrissy’s blog you’ll have noticed that she’s got a couple of her own published books listed and featured there.  So today we’re going to look at Chrissy’s books and then I’ll finish up by sharing with you the last couple of questions from our interview.

So I asked Chrissy to tell me about her books and this is what she told me…

[Chrissy] My first book is called Agartha’s Castaway. The genre is young adult fantasy, adventure, and light sci-fi. It’s about three teenagers who are shipwrecked on what they presume is a strange tropical island. Here’s the blurb.

Dinosaurs, abduction, and a hidden civilization were never part of seventeen-year-old Casey Smith’s vacation plans. That is, until a freak storm tossed her and two best friends, Mike and Jack, out to sea. When they wash up on what they presume to be a mysterious tropical island...they soon discover that being lost...is the least of their troubles. In a jungle that teems with impossible creatures, UFOs, and an unworldly landscape, the three friends need to team up to fight danger...without letting their emotions tear them apart. Can they find a way to survive the harsh jungle…and its deadly inhabitants?

Here’s the book trailer: http://youtu.be/viwT0M8Ms_g

***
I think what makes the novel unique and different is the way it crosses dinosaurs with UFOs. It’s kind of like Jurassic Park MEETS Independence Day with Twilight-like romance. I’m pleased to announce that Agartha’s Last Hope (book 2) was just released November 12th.

Also I am ¾ of the way through a new adventure fantasy called, Eternal Vows. It’s about a twenty year old girl named Sarah Larker who returns to a cave where her sister disappeared five years earlier. She walks through a portal and is mistaken for a runaway princess on the run by a dangerous Immortal king in medieval times. Her plan is bold as well as daring—become this princess, wed the king, and slip on an ancient wedding ring that will unlock the portal. Then find her sister and run as fast as she can out of Dodge. But taking on the identity of Princess Gloria comes along with dangerous consequences; and slipping on the ruby ring comes with an even higher price.

I don’t know about everyone else but I’m certainly fascinated by these story lines and have already added the Agartha books to my TBR pile.

After reading about her books, and seeing the trailer, I wondered about and asked Chrissy one more question – a completely random but fun question – about the books.

If your books were to be made in to a movie or TV series, who would like to see play your lead character(s)?

[Chrissy] I’d have Sterling Knight from the Disney channel be Mike! (but before he cut his hair) He’d be perfect! He’s hot, funny, and a little conceited! Yeah, he’s Mike all the way. And maybe Joe Jonas could be Jack. (of course when he has the shaggy hair going) Since I’m stuck on the Disney channel, I’m going to say Victoria Justice for Casey.

And then I asked her one last question.  Is there any particular advice you would give to other new and aspiring writers?

[Chrissy] It can be overwhelming to a new writer when they share their work for the very first time. Every writer pours out their heart and soul onto the pages. It can be frustrating and the criticism can be harsh. Not to mention, you don’t get paid a whole lot either. But let’s face it, negative comments hurt all the way down to the inner core of your being. My advice would be to write the best that you can, never ever give up, and always be proud. Keep working on writing technique, character development, plot, voice, dialogue, flow, style, and point of view. But most of all, have fun with your writing. Put on your favorite tunes, crack open a Pepsi, pop some Hershey Kisses into your mouth…and then tap away. That’s what it’s all about.

Thanks so much Chrissy! I’ve had a lot of fun putting this together and finding out more about you, your books and everything.

[Chrissy] Thank you for having me here today on your lovely blog. I enjoyed it so much and for anybody who tuned in, I’d love to connect with you online.

And one last time for all of you who have stopped by to see this, here are all the places online where you can find and connect with Chrissy:
