Romance

Synopsis:
Here’s the problem: when Rox was hired, she told her smoking-hot boss Cash that she was married, but she’s not. Now, three years later, she’s kind of accidentally living with him, and he’s being a perfect gentleman, dang it.

Everybody in the office said that Cash was a heartbreaker, that he’d bump her and dump her, so Rox decided not to become a statistic. She went out and bought herself some rings of the finest cubic zirconia so that she could work with Cash, who was several inches over six feet tall, emerald-eyed, ripped, gorgeous, his tailored suit clinging to his athletic body, sporting a British accent, and loaded.

It had seemed like such a good plan at the time.

But now, three years later, she and Cash have become friends. They travel together for work often, and they’re the best of buddies.When Rox gets thrown out of her apartment, Cash insists that she come live with him until they can find her a place because that’s what friends do.

Now, even though everyone insists that Cash never goes after married women, something about him has changed. There are little touches, little slips, and Rox is more and more tempted to tell hunky, gorgeous Cash that she never was married.

And then he’ll take her and break her, and then he’ll walk away, and then she’ll lose her job, and she still hasn’t found a place to live.

And yet, every time her looks at her with mischief in his dark green eyes, every time they’re teasing and it somehow turns into tickling, every time she swats at him and somehow ends up in his arms, she wants so much to risk everything.

What’s a working stiff to do when she falls in love with her friend, the boss?

THE EXCERPT

Not even a minute passes when I realize I have no glasses. Not even little plastic cups in the bathroom.

Seriously? This is a four star hotel in downtown Seattle. The reviews are great; the place is clean, classy, and well kept. And yet they leave one chick to fend for herself at the front desk and fail to provide even the most basic necessities in the rooms? I’m a hotel snob. My standards might be high. But seriously?

This shit is crazy. I throw on my coat, jog out of the room, and head down to the front desk.

Again.

Mira’s on the phone, making a coffee for a displeased customer, and attempting to shuffle through a
pile of paperwork. When she spots me, she eyes me cautiously for a moment, then returns her attention to the multitasking at hand.

I wander to the edge of the desk and wait patiently until she serves the coffee and hangs the phone up.

Her nose scrunches and she winces. “Is the wine no good? Do you want that cash back? Because—”

“No.” I lift a hand. “I just need some glasses.”

“There are none in your room?”

“Nope.”

She bites her lip, and my gaze follows. It’s far from seductive. She’s nervous as hell. But something about it makes my cock twitch. “I’m so sorry.”

“It’s not your fault. Unless you’re the housekeeping department, too. In which case, I wouldn’t be
surprised.”

She jumps toward the bar and begins the search for the glasses. “No,” she laughs awkwardly, “of course not.”

“Well. That’s a relief.”

She returns with one glass.

“I need two. I’m having company.”

She’s dumbstruck. A tinge of red paints her cheeks. “Oh! Yes, of course.” She hands me a second.
“Anything else for you?”

“Yeah…” I veer around the desk toward the bar and snatch a menu from the counter. “Can I order some food to go?”

“Absolutely. Give me just a second.” She straightens a pile of paperwork and reaches for a notepad
before joining me at the cash till. I watch her glance over her shoulder, then eye the phone. She’s a
million miles away. She’s overwhelmed, is what she is.

“Are you the cook, too?”

“Pfftt.” She waves and puffs her lips. “God, no.”

“Actually, nevermind.” I set the menu down and slide the glasses toward her. “I’ll be back to get these. I’m going to grab something to eat around the corner instead, here in Belltown.”

“Wait! You don’t have to do that. I’m really not the cook, I swear!”

“I certainly hope not.” My bland expression must affect her, because she retreats right back into her
shell, like a scared turtle.

“Well, I’d be happy to recommend some places to eat.” Her voice softens, and I suddenly feel like an
asshole. I’m good at that, apparently.

“I know Belltown pretty well. Thanks, though.”

Her shoulders sag a little, but she smiles kindly and wishes me a good night. I head outside into nightfall and sail around the corner, crossing two blocks until I reach my favorite dive bar. I order wings and a salad to go and wait outside while they put my order in.

Asian lovers stroll by, feeding one another gelato. A valet driver whistles at his colleague from the curb, his face lighting up with laughter. So much life, buzzing all around me, but nothing dwells within. Not since he passed away. Not since I’ve dedicated every ounce of energy to my work. My job as a graphic designer fuels me, brings me joy, but not life. Not the kind that existed before.

Now I rely on biking, hiking, and women to dull the ache. We all have vices. I’d like to think mine are healthy. Biking equals exercise and fresh air. Win. Hiking equals more exercise and more fresh air.

Double win. Women equals sex, and we all need that. Triple win.

Still, somewhere, the light faded out. And I don’t even know how to begin getting it back.

And don't miss your chance to win...

EXCERPT & GIVEAWAY for 'Better When it Hurts'

It's the dark secret you don't share.

It's the desire you've never voiced.

Because you wonder if it really is.... BETTER WHEN IT HURTS.

Feel the tease, in another excerpt from Skye Warren.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The whistle of a belt coming off follows me into Blue’s bedroom. My breath stutters in my chest. I hear the threat of the movement, the speed and power behind it. It’s more than a man getting undressed.
There’s a hundred ways a belt can be used to hurt me. I know them well.
I turn my head to the side, addressing him but showing deference too. It’s an instinct now. It’s survival. “What are you going to do with that?”
“I’d rather show you,” he says, approaching me, prowling around me.
I don’t want him to hit me with that belt. Not because I can’t take the pain. I know I can, because I’ve done it before. I don’t want him to hit me because I might start hating him.
“Wait,” I say.
He doesn’t wait. One hand takes my wrist. Standing behind me, he leans close. “What do you think I’ll do with this? Make your pretty skin all red? Make you cry?”
I tense, twisting my arm. It only hurts me, and I’m still held tight. “Don’t.”
“I’m going to do both of those things before we’re done here, Lola.” He pauses, loosening his grip slightly. “But I’m not going to whip you with this.”
There’s only a second where I can feel relieved before I feel him drawing my other hand behind me. It’s a mistake to relax around him. Whatever I’m thinking, he’s doing something different. However much I brace myself, it’s still going to hurt.
He wraps the soft leather around my wrists, binding them together behind my back. It pushes my breasts out in front of me. Cool air brushes over my skin, tightening my nipples.
There’s weakness in this pose, being held, being open.
And there’s strength too, the pride of being wanted, the power of desire.
“On your knees,” he says so softly I almost don’t hear him.
I don’t know what he’s thinking. Whether he sees me as an object he can use or as an enemy he can conquer. I’m a little off balance, lilting to the side as I sink to the carpet. His hands cup my arms, helping me down, guiding my gently. It feels more like worship than anger, more like kindness than cruelty.
At least until the sharp sound of his zipper rips through the air.
His voice follows. “Candy doesn’t think I’ll hurt you.”
I shiver at the foreboding underneath the words. “Yes.”
He undresses slowly, methodically, exposing rough skin and dark hair and a thick, jutting cock.
I have seen his cock before, but only in the dark, holding it in my fist while I jerked him off, shadows and motion. Now I see the skin like the dark side of a peach, almost the color of a bruise. I see the curve of a vein underneath. I see the head of his cock, fat and proud and already glistening at the tip.
I see everything clearly because the saturated late-afternoon light still streams through his window. Our hours are all backward and twisted. Where another woman would do this at midnight, would expose her shame to the moon, mine comes open at five o’clock.
“She thinks you’re safe with me because I protect the other girls.” He approaches me, his cock near my face, his eyes looking down on me. “I even protect you.”
I choke out the words. “Because only you get to touch me.”
He nods approvingly. Candy doesn’t understand, he means. I understand. He’s showing me that we’re together on this, like some perverted joint mission where I agree to be hurt. And haven’t I? I showed up here of my own free will. Maybe I do want what’s coming to me.
Is it 'Better When it Hurts'? EXCERPT & GIVEAWAY
Even now, today, it's practically a conversational taboo.  But you know you've wondered.  You've considered playing games and pushing boundaries.  Do you know, is it BETTER WHEN IT HURTS?
Enjoy this excerpt from Skye Warren...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I try not to scan the floor when I enter. There’s already a buzz in the air, the hunger and desperation of a strip club on Saturday night. I’m ready to earn money, ready to move my body.

Ready to pretend Blue doesn’t bother me.

He’s nowhere in sight, and I breathe a sigh of relief. A group of men are still gathered near the railing. They’d tipped me pretty well while I was up there, so I figure I have a good shot at a lap dance. I saunter over, my breasts barely contained in the red bikini top, my skin coated in sweat and glitter and the thick smoke of this place.

“Nice set,” says a low voice from behind me.

I turn to see Blue standing there, arms crossed so his muscles bulge, lids lowered in that intense way of his. Shit. “Thanks,” I say, but the only thing I’m really thankful for is that my voice doesn’t shake.

He’s the head of security at the Grand, which should make me feel safe. Except we have a history. And he hates my guts. So there’s no affection in his eyes when they scan me up and down. No kindness in his voice when he adds, “You look great.”

The way he says it, it sounds like a threat. He makes me feel like the scared little girl I used to be when I knew him before. And him? He’s like the big bad wolf, sizing me up before he swallows me whole.

I force myself to shrug at him, to toss my hair. “Thanks, sweetie.”

He circles me, surrounding me. “But then, you always look great. That’s what you like, isn’t it? Having men panting after you? Leading us along by our dicks?”

My throat gets tight. I know that’s what people think of me. They take one look at my lipstick and my short skirt and assume the worst. God, they’re right. But it’s worse to hear it from him. Worse because he once believed in me. “Do you expect me to apologize for earning a living?”

His lids lower. “Not for that.”

I can’t meet his eyes. I know exactly what he wants me to apologize for. And he’ll never believe me. Even showing weakness in this game is enough to get me killed. “I don’t apologize to anyone.”

“Of course you don’t,” he says, his voice full of loathing. “But I don’t want your words.”

I can’t help but whisper, “What do you want?”

That makes him smile. It’s not a nice smile. “I think you know the answer to that.”

He wants to hurt me, to use me. He wants to fuck me. I swallow hard. “That isn’t for sale.”

“I wasn’t planning to pay you.”

This should be easy. Tell him no. Make him believe it. I’ve done this for a thousand men before. Somehow he’s different. Maybe because I don’t really believe it myself.

I know he’s watching me. I know he’s hatching his plans. My heart speeds up every time I turn away from him, wondering if this is the time he’ll pounce. One of these times, he’s going to dig into me with his teeth and his claws. He’s going to hurt me, and I’m not sure I’ll survive it.

Not tonight, though. Not now.

I take a step away from him. “If you aren’t going to pay for my time, I think I’ll find someone who will.”

His eyes darken. “Your call, gorgeous.”

I hear the unspoken message beneath his words, steel under velvet. For now.

REVIEW

What do you do when everything you know, everyone you hold near and dear to your heart, and (what seems like) the whole world is turned upside down, torn apart?  How do you cope when you’re left scrambling with shreds of the life you had? How does the tragedy change you?
For Isla and Ben, these questions – hypothetical’s that humans occasionally ponder as they consider their place in the world and the meaning of their lives – became the only thoughts in their minds after the tsunami swept through Thailand on December 26, 2004.  They both lost. Period, straight up, no prettying-it-up... They lost.  They lost family. They lost faith. They lost friends. They lost each other.
And then life went on.
More than ten years later they randomly run into each other and it all, the memories, pain, everything, it all comes back.  This time they each need to face what happened then in order to be able to move forward happily with their lives; and it helps that they can face the troubles and terrors of that horrible day together.  Toss in exes, new/old friends, well meaning strangers, a backpacking thief, and a wise-eyed elephant and you’ve got The Day of the Wave.
I was apprehensive about reading Amie Stuart’s new novel.  I just couldn’t decide whether reading this story was something that I would be able to push through.  I’d pick it up and think to myself “today is the day!” and then nothing.  Until one day I finally buckled down, told myself I had to do it.  I’ve read books that I’ve disliked before.  I’ve forced myself to read all the way through books that within a few chapters of starting, I knew I was going not going to like at all.  I was nervous that Day of the Wave was going to end up being one of them.
But then Isla’s pain and her fear caught at my heart and it didn’t take long for me to realize that Ben used his work and even his optimistic attitude to mask his lingering fear and guilt.  More than a decade after the tsunami they both struggled and fought (each in their own ways) to survive.  And as I read I realized that that – the struggle, the pain, the hope and desire for life, was the point. The story was about what they lost, it was about what they had to do to survive.  In the end, they story was about that and so much more – because in the end Isla and Ben don’t just survive, they live.
I don’t know that I can say that I love this book.  Saying that doesn’t really explain how I feel, perhaps a better way of describing it would be that the story touched my heart.  Yes.  It touched my heart – because you don’t have to have lived through a tsunami or other natural disaster to understand the kind of loss that shatters you to a degree that you don’t know whether you can survive it, or whether you even want to.  So yes, The Day of the Wave touched me and I recommend you read it, so that it can touch you as well.

For the Love of Music - ONCE IN A BLUE MOON BLITZ

For anyone who's followed, glanced at, read or stumbled upon my blog, it likely comes as little surprise that while reading is #1 on my list of favorite things to do, listening to music (and singing, especially if no one is around to hear me) is pretty high on the list too.  I'm always revved when I hear from other readers, bloggers, and writers about how they use music to keep them motivated and inspired while they go about their days.  It's just my luck that Author Amie Stuart of ONCE IN A BLUE MOON loves music just as much as me!!

Here's what she has to say about music, and how she was happily able to incorporate it into her book.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love music. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have set up Aunt Susie with her fictional dancehall.
I love music so much that it’s probably my third favorite thing after my kids and books! And I have a special soft spot for singer-songwriters like Sheryl Crow and Patti Griffin (if you haven’t heard her duet with Dierkes Bently, I highly recommend). As you read through ONCE IN A BLUE MOON, you’ll notice the chapter titles. Some of those are taken from Betti’s rules but some are actual songs.  Funny enough, I listened to a LOT of Stevie Ray Vaughn while writing this book! I say funny because, normally, I can’t listen to music with lyrics when I write. I guess I listened so much that it stopped intruding!
So who’s your favorite go-to, house cleaning, seat-dancing in the car till you embarrass your children band, singer or song(s)????
And here’s the playlist for the curious:
Satisfaction – The Rolling Stones
Same Old Song and Dance – Aerosmith
Love Struck Baby – Stevie Ray Vaughn
Crossfire – Stevie Ray Vaughn
Crazy – Patsy Cline
Gimme a Bullet – ACDC
Where is the Love – The Blackeyed Peas
There Goes the Neighborhood – Sheryl Crow
Remedy – The Black Crowes
Killing Time – Clint Black
Do You Want Fries With That? – Tim McGraw
Good Enough – Sarah McLachlan
Knockin' On Heaven's Door – Guns 'n Roses
Pride and Joy – Stevie Ray Vaughn
Mad Mission – Patty Griffin
Living With Ghosts – Patty Griffin
Tightrope – Stevie Ray Vaughn
Without You – Motley Crue
Not Alone – I'm going with Patty Griffin
