Reading And Writing And How They Co-Exist

Multi-tasking is a thing that everyone can do. It’s a thing that most moms excel at. I myself have taught myself to become good at undertaking (and actually finishing) half a dozen or more tasks all at once. But even for me, there are simply some things I can’t do while involved in certain other pursuits.

I can’t watch TV or movies while writing. I can listen to music and write. My kids can watch TV in the same room as I’m in and I can write. But even if it’s a show I’ve watched a hundred times and know line-by-line, I can not write if it’s on.

When I’m in the thick of writing I tend not to read much. Even if I’ve got 45 minutes to kill in the car while I’m waiting for Angel Face’s dance class to be finished, I can’t get in to reading a book when a part of my mind is (as it always is) absorbed with the story I’m crafting. It’s as if my brain becomes locked on the tale I’m writing and puts up this wall of ‘nope’ anytime I try to read.

I’ll fritter away hours of the day scrolling through Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, but reading is practically impossible when a part of me is silently saying “you could be writing!”

The reverse is similar, if not quite the same. When I’ve got a book in my hands that is simply entrancing me, I’ll very rarely stop reading to go and write. I can, and have read as many as 4 different novels at one time – my choice of the moment dependent largely on my location and what may be going on around me. But it’s pretty damn rare that you’ll find me reading one moment and writing the next.

I mean it has happened. But not often.

The past couple months I’ve been writing… a lot. (In the past 6 weeks, I’ve written roughly 80,000 words!!!) So this issue of not reading while immersed in my own writing inevitably came up. After all, while I’m committed to writing, I still have 4 kids to care for and a household to run, and work. That leaves a good number of hours during the day when I simply can not be at my computer (or on another device) writing. And sure, I do spend a portion of that time thinking about what happens next and all the things, but sometimes even my writers brain needs a break from the story. But if I’m unable to lose myself in a book?

Well I’m happy to say that after all these years of this struggle, I’ve finally found a way to “read” during periods of writing, without actually reading.

Audiobooks.

Okay, yes, this is not a new thing. It’s not a unique or even brilliant idea. But it’s changed things in my daily life dramatically. You can laugh, it’s okay. It is sort of funny.

The thing, for me, about audiobooks is that I can be vastly entertained by the story as I listen to it, but my mind doesn’t latch on to the story in quite the same way as when I’m physically reading it. In a way the audiobook is like the music or TV in the background – I enjoy it but it doesn’t fully distract me from what my mind is focused on. I can satisfy my need to lose myself in another world, without becoming a part of it.

Another bonus? It takes way longer to get through a book while listening to it in audio format than it would if I was reading it myself. So I’m also not bombarding my brain with story-world upon story-world, upon story-world.

So for me, it’s a definite audiobooks for the win!

What about you? Do you listen to audio books?

What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

TUESDAYS TUNES - Spirits

Yesterday on Inside My Mind I wrote a blog about writers and where/how they find their inspiration. It was also a little bit about the importance of being able to find inspiration in the little, everyday things that many of us take for granted. And I added a song that, honestly, has been in my head and serving as one of those little points of inspiration for me for a while.

And since it seemed like a good choice for this weeks Tuesdays Tunes, I'm sharing it again here.

Enjoy... The Strumbellas - SPIRITS

An Old Favorite for TUESDAY'S TUNES - For the Nights I Can't Remember

When I'm writing I almost having music playing in the background. I create playlists that help to keep me in the mood for certain scenes or for an overall feel of the story. Songs will tend to overlap - I like what I like and those songs influence certain emotions and moods in me, which in turn helps me get those feelings into the characters or mood of whatever story I happen to be writing at the time.

For some reason no matter what story I'm writing, what genre it is primarily, and no matter how vastly different the characters may be from one another, there is this one song that seems to end up on nearly every playlist.

It's not a sad song, really.

It's not a dramatically happy one either, I don't think.

I guess for me it's one of the songs that signals hope. Hope for the characters to figure their shit out. Hope that at the end, we find the HEA. Hope that when things are dark, there's a light at the end of the tunnel.

Maybe that's just me and my take on it.

Take a minute to listen... Tell me what you think?

Get Back In To Reading & Check Out These AMAZING NEW AUTHORS

As you may have noticed if you checked in on my blog or if you follow me on Facebook, I took a break over the summer from promoting books and authors, and all that fun stuff.  For about 7 weeks I read for pleasure, focused on and spent time with my kids and extended family, and generally just enjoyed my summer.

If I saw something interesting on Facebook, I shared it on my page.  If there was a particular book that I wanted people to know about, I shared it on Facebook.  But the blog was left to quietly and patiently await the end of summer holidays (for my kids) and my return to active blogging duty.  And, as evidenced by the cover reveals and blitz tours that I’ve done over the past week or so, now I’m back.

In mid/late-August I started a “pimp an author” event that ran for 17 days. Each day a new author and their page was promoted; 17 authors were featured as the Author of the Day. 17 pages were shared, promoted and pimped. And over the course of those weeks, I made a number of great new contacts and friends.

Now it’s time to get back to work – to reading, reviewing, promoting, sharing and generally just pimping everything I can about books, authors and more.  But before I do that, I’m going to do one final pimping of those 17 wonderful authors – only I’m doing it here on the blog!

Are you ready?

For the Love of Music - ONCE IN A BLUE MOON BLITZ

For anyone who's followed, glanced at, read or stumbled upon my blog, it likely comes as little surprise that while reading is #1 on my list of favorite things to do, listening to music (and singing, especially if no one is around to hear me) is pretty high on the list too.  I'm always revved when I hear from other readers, bloggers, and writers about how they use music to keep them motivated and inspired while they go about their days.  It's just my luck that Author Amie Stuart of ONCE IN A BLUE MOON loves music just as much as me!!

Here's what she has to say about music, and how she was happily able to incorporate it into her book.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love music. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have set up Aunt Susie with her fictional dancehall.
I love music so much that it’s probably my third favorite thing after my kids and books! And I have a special soft spot for singer-songwriters like Sheryl Crow and Patti Griffin (if you haven’t heard her duet with Dierkes Bently, I highly recommend). As you read through ONCE IN A BLUE MOON, you’ll notice the chapter titles. Some of those are taken from Betti’s rules but some are actual songs.  Funny enough, I listened to a LOT of Stevie Ray Vaughn while writing this book! I say funny because, normally, I can’t listen to music with lyrics when I write. I guess I listened so much that it stopped intruding!
So who’s your favorite go-to, house cleaning, seat-dancing in the car till you embarrass your children band, singer or song(s)????
And here’s the playlist for the curious:
Satisfaction – The Rolling Stones
Same Old Song and Dance – Aerosmith
Love Struck Baby – Stevie Ray Vaughn
Crossfire – Stevie Ray Vaughn
Crazy – Patsy Cline
Gimme a Bullet – ACDC
Where is the Love – The Blackeyed Peas
There Goes the Neighborhood – Sheryl Crow
Remedy – The Black Crowes
Killing Time – Clint Black
Do You Want Fries With That? – Tim McGraw
Good Enough – Sarah McLachlan
Knockin' On Heaven's Door – Guns 'n Roses
Pride and Joy – Stevie Ray Vaughn
Mad Mission – Patty Griffin
Living With Ghosts – Patty Griffin
Tightrope – Stevie Ray Vaughn
Without You – Motley Crue
Not Alone – I'm going with Patty Griffin
Featuring Chrissy Peebles - Part 3
For this last part of the Blog Feature that Chrissy and I have worked on for the last few weeks.  This is the end of road for the feature but even though we’ve got to go our separate ways again, both of us – Chrissy on The Purple Brick Road and myself here on this blog – will be busy with our work and a number of exciting post over the next weeks and months.  But before we’re really done we’ve got a couple more things to share with you!!
If you’ve managed to make the jump over to Chrissy’s blog you’ll have noticed that she’s got a couple of her own published books listed and featured there.  So today we’re going to look at Chrissy’s books and then I’ll finish up by sharing with you the last couple of questions from our interview.
So I asked Chrissy to tell me about her books and this is what she told me…
[Chrissy] My first book is called Agartha’s Castaway. The genre is young adult fantasy, adventure, and light sci-fi. It’s about three teenagers who are shipwrecked on what they presume is a strange tropical island. Here’s the blurb.
Dinosaurs, abduction, and a hidden civilization were never part of seventeen-year-old Casey Smith’s vacation plans. That is, until a freak storm tossed her and two best friends, Mike and Jack, out to sea. When they wash up on what they presume to be a mysterious tropical island...they soon discover that being lost...is the least of their troubles. In a jungle that teems with impossible creatures, UFOs, and an unworldly landscape, the three friends need to team up to fight danger...without letting their emotions tear them apart. Can they find a way to survive the harsh jungle…and its deadly inhabitants?
Here’s the book trailer: http://youtu.be/viwT0M8Ms_g
***
I think what makes the novel unique and different is the way it crosses dinosaurs with UFOs. It’s kind of like Jurassic Park MEETS Independence Day with Twilight-like romance. I’m pleased to announce that Agartha’s Last Hope (book 2) was just released November 12th.
Also I am ¾ of the way through a new adventure fantasy called, Eternal Vows. It’s about a twenty year old girl named Sarah Larker who returns to a cave where her sister disappeared five years earlier. She walks through a portal and is mistaken for a runaway princess on the run by a dangerous Immortal king in medieval times. Her plan is bold as well as daring—become this princess, wed the king, and slip on an ancient wedding ring that will unlock the portal. Then find her sister and run as fast as she can out of Dodge. But taking on the identity of Princess Gloria comes along with dangerous consequences; and slipping on the ruby ring comes with an even higher price.
I don’t know about everyone else but I’m certainly fascinated by these story lines and have already added the Agartha books to my TBR pile.
After reading about her books, and seeing the trailer, I wondered about and asked Chrissy one more question – a completely random but fun question – about the books.
If your books were to be made in to a movie or TV series, who would like to see play your lead character(s)?
[Chrissy] I’d have Sterling Knight from the Disney channel be Mike! (but before he cut his hair) He’d be perfect! He’s hot, funny, and a little conceited! Yeah, he’s Mike all the way. And maybe Joe Jonas could be Jack. (of course when he has the shaggy hair going) Since I’m stuck on the Disney channel, I’m going to say Victoria Justice for Casey.
And then I asked her one last question.  Is there any particular advice you would give to other new and aspiring writers?
[Chrissy] It can be overwhelming to a new writer when they share their work for the very first time. Every writer pours out their heart and soul onto the pages. It can be frustrating and the criticism can be harsh. Not to mention, you don’t get paid a whole lot either. But let’s face it, negative comments hurt all the way down to the inner core of your being. My advice would be to write the best that you can, never ever give up, and always be proud. Keep working on writing technique, character development, plot, voice, dialogue, flow, style, and point of view. But most of all, have fun with your writing. Put on your favorite tunes, crack open a Pepsi, pop some Hershey Kisses into your mouth…and then tap away. That’s what it’s all about.
Thanks so much Chrissy! I’ve had a lot of fun putting this together and finding out more about you, your books and everything.
[Chrissy] Thank you for having me here today on your lovely blog. I enjoyed it so much and for anybody who tuned in, I’d love to connect with you online.
And one last time for all of you who have stopped by to see this, here are all the places online where you can find and connect with Chrissy:
